Survivor is a famous global game played on television. It is a reality competition where people are left in lonely places. These players are called castaways. They must find everything they need to stay alive. They have to build their own shelters from trees and plants. They must also find water and food to eat. Most versions of the game last about 39 days. However, some versions in Turkey have lasted over 150 days.

Castaways are split into groups called tribes. Each tribe has its own camp and a special color. They wear a cloth called a buff to show their tribe. Tribes must work together to survive the elements. They might use a machete or cooking pots to help. Sometimes they find fruit or fish to eat. Sometimes they must boil water to make it safe to drink. Tribes may also swap members through a random draw. This is called a tribe swap.

Players compete in many different types of challenges. Some challenges are fast races through obstacle courses. Other challenges are hard puzzles or tests of strength. A message called a "treemail" tells them about upcoming games. These challenges can be for rewards or for immunity. Rewards might be tasty food or luxury items. Immunity is very important because it keeps players safe. Winning an immunity idol or necklace means you cannot be voted out.

In the middle of the game, the tribes merge. This means all the players join into one single tribe. They often celebrate this with a big feast. After the merge, players compete in challenges alone. They no longer play as a group. When players are voted out, they join a group called the jury. The jury members watch the rest of the game. They do not play in the challenges anymore. They sit in on meetings to watch the players.

At a meeting called Tribal Council, players make big decisions. They discuss what happened in the camp. Then, they vote to eliminate one person from the game. The last two or three players go to a Final Tribal Council. There, the jury asks them questions. Finally, the jury votes for one winner. That winner gets a grand prize and the title of Sole Survivor. This show format was first made by Charlie Parsons in 1992. The American version has aired 49 seasons since the year 2000.
