Reality television is a special kind of TV programming. It documents real-life situations that are supposed to be unscripted. Instead of using professional actors, these shows often star ordinary people.

Many shows use a tool called "confessionals." These are short interviews where cast members talk to the camera. They use these moments to explain how they feel about what is happening. This helps the audience understand the story better. Some shows are competitions where people are slowly eliminated. This might happen because of judges, the viewers, or the other contestants.

There are many different ways these shows work. Some focus on talent searches where people compete to be stars. Others might show people trying to succeed in a new job.

A famous style involves putting strangers together in one place. This creates drama as they live together for a long time. Some shows even follow families through big changes in their lives. These shows can make regular people become very famous celebrities.

This can happen through talent shows or just by being on screen.

This type of television has a very long history. Some people say the oldest version was in Germany in the early 1940s. In 1948, Allen Funt started a show called Candid Camera. It used hidden cameras to film people reacting to funny pranks.

Later, in 1964, a documentary called Seven Up! followed children in the UK. Filmmakers interviewed 14 children and then checked on them every seven years. This became known as the Up Series. These early shows helped create the ideas we see on TV today.

Modern reality TV became very popular in the 1990s and 2000s. A Dutch show called Nummer 28 was very important. It put strangers together and used music and confessionals. This show inspired famous series like Big Brother and The Real World. In the early 2000s, shows like Survivor and Idol became huge global successes. New technology helped make this possible too. In 1989, computer editing systems made it easier to fix video. Editors could quickly turn many hours of footage into a good story.

Not everyone thinks reality television is a good thing. Some critics say the shows do not show real life. They worry that producers might stage scenes or edit footage to mislead people. Some shows might even pick a winner ahead of time.

Other people worry about the people on the shows. They say some programs can be mean or exploit the people involved. This can cause mental health issues or problems with self-esteem. Even so, many people still enjoy watching these stories unfold on their screens.
