These shows often follow ordinary people in real situations. Some shows are contests. In these shows, people try to win a prize. Judges or viewers might pick the winner. This can lead to people being sent home.

Many shows use "confessionals." These are short interviews where people talk to the camera. They explain how they feel about what happened. This style became very popular in the 1990s. A Dutch show called Nummer 28 helped start this way of filming. It put strangers together in one place. This show inspired others like Big Brother and The Real World.

But some people do not like them. Critics say the shows are not always true. They say shows might stage scenes or edit video to change the story. Some shows can even be mean to the people on screen. This can cause problems for their mental health.
