Wrestlers act out stories and pretend their fights are real. This is called kayfabe. It is a way to keep the magic alive for the fans.

Wrestlers usually fall into two groups. The heroes are called faces. They are kind and work hard to win. The bad guys are called heels. They use tricks and act mean to get the crowd to boo them. Sometimes, a wrestler will change from a hero to a bad guy. This is called a turn.

In the past, wrestlers kept the secret very strictly. They stayed in character even when they were not working. They might not even eat together in public! They did this so no one would know the stories were scripted. Today, things are different. Most wrestlers only act during shows or on TV.

Sometimes, kayfabe is broken. This can happen if a wrestler gets hurt. It can also happen to honor a wrestler who has passed away. Even outside of wrestling, people use this idea. Some famous actors pretend to be rivals to make a fun story for fans.
