Surigao Strait

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Surigao Strait is a wide path of water. It sits in the southern Philippines. This strait connects the Bohol Sea to the Leyte Gulf. It lies between the Visayas and Mindanao regions. You can find it between Mindanao Island and Panaon Island. It also sits between the Dinagat Islands and Leyte Island.

The water here is very deep. It also has a very strong current. This current moves the water quickly through the strait. A navigation light sits on Suluan Island at the north entrance. Hibuson Island is also at the north end. These features help ships find their way safely.

Many ferries travel across this water every day. They carry goods and people between the islands. These boats move between the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Some ferries stop at Liloan in Southern Leyte. Other ferries stop at Surigao City in Surigao del Norte. This makes the strait a busy path for travel.

People have different stories about the name Surigao. One legend names a Negrito leader called Solibao. He lived near the Surigao River. Spanish explorers may have misheard his name. They might have called it Surigao instead. Another idea uses the Spanish word surgir. This word means swift water or current.

Many famous ships have passed through these waters. Ferdinand Magellan sailed through in March 1521. His crew was on the first trip around the Earth. Later, a big battle happened on October 25, 1944. American battleships fought a Japanese force here. Many Japanese ships, like the Yamashiro and Fusō, were sunk. This was a major event in history.
