Kanmon Straits

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Kanmon Straits is a busy stretch of water in Japan.

It sits between two of the country's main islands. These islands are named Honshu and Kyushu. The water connects the Sea of Japan to the Inland Sea. This makes it a very important path for ships. Many cargo ships use it as a shortcut. It helps them travel from Korea and China to Osaka and Tokyo.

Moving across the water is quite easy today. You can use old-fashioned ferries to cross. One car ferry takes only ten minutes to travel. There is also a passenger ferry from Moji-ko to Shimonoseki. A large bridge called the Kanmonkyo Bridge also carries vehicles. This bridge first opened to cars on November 14, 1973. Most people use the Kanmon Tunnels instead. These tunnels carry trains, cars, and even people walking.

These tunnels were built at different times in history. The first railway tunnel opened on November 15, 1942. Later, the highway tunnel opened on March 9, 1958. The Shinkansen train tunnel opened on March 10, 1975. Even the narrowest part of the water has a tunnel for pedestrians. There is also a new airport nearby in Kitakyushu. The New Kitakyushu Airport opened on March 16, 2006. It helps bring more trade and tourism to the area.

A lot of people live in this region. About 1.3 million people live in the Kanmon area. This includes about one million people in Kitakyushu. There are also about 300,000 people in Shimonoseki. The name of the strait comes from these two cities. Shimonoseki provides the "Kan" part of the name. Moji provides the "mon" part of the name.

There are many fun things to do near the water. Every August, people hold a summer fireworks festival. You can also take boat rides on the straits. The Voyager pleasure boat departs from Moji-ko for cruises. Some people even take helicopter joyrides from the area. In October 2005, a huge airship flew through Moji. It was a Zeppelin NT from Germany. This was part of a special tour across Japan.
