He lived in the Philippines many years ago. He was one of two chiefs on his island. The other chief was named Zula. People in the area called the Visayan people the Pintados. This was because they often had tattoos on their skin.

Lapulapu likely followed the local animist beliefs of his people. He was a very important figure in his community.

In 1521, a Portuguese explorer named Ferdinand Magellan arrived. He was sailing for the King of Spain. Magellan wanted local leaders to obey the Spanish king. He also wanted them to pay tribute, which is a type of tax. A leader named Rajah Humabon from nearby Cebu agreed to this. However, Lapulapu refused to follow the Spanish orders. He did not want to show respect to a new ruler.

Magellan led about 60 Spaniards to the shores of Mactan. They could not land near the beach because of coral reefs. They had to stay far away in their ships. Lapulapu and his warriors met them on the shore. There were about 1,500 warriors ready to fight. They used large shields and spears made of rattan. They also used big swords called kampilan.

The battle was very intense and difficult. Magellan and his men tried to use their armor to stay safe. They even set fire to some houses to scare the warriors. This only made the warriors more angry. The warriors charged at the Spanish forces. Magellan was wounded by a poisoned arrow during the fight. He and several of his men were killed. The rest of the Spanish group escaped back to their ships. This battle stopped the Spanish from staying in the islands for a long time.

Because of this victory, the Spanish did not return for over forty years. They finally arrived again in 1565 with Miguel López de Legazpi. Today, Lapulapu is remembered as a great Filipino hero.
