He lived during a time of great discovery. In 1511, he joined a big trip to find the Spice Islands. These islands were in a place called the Maluku islands. This area was very special to people in Europe. It was the only place in the world that grew nutmeg and mace. People used these spices to flavor food. They also used them as medicine and to keep food fresh.

Serrão’s journey was full of many hard jobs. He was a captain in a fleet of three ships. This fleet was sent from Malacca by Afonso de Albuquerque. The ships sailed east past Malacca through Indonesia. While at a place called Gresik, Serrão married a Javanese woman. She went on the trip with him. In 1512, his ship hit a reef and broke apart in a storm.

He and his crew reached the island of Hitu. They had to use a Chinese junk to keep moving.

Life on the islands was very different for the explorers. Serrão had armor and guns. These things impressed the powerful chiefs of Hitu. The local leaders were fighting with a place called Luhu. Because the Portuguese could fight well, they became military allies. Serrão eventually went to the island of Ternate. There, he met the ruler, Sultan Bayan Sirrullah. The Sultan and Serrão became very close friends.

The Sultan even made Serrão his personal advisor for many things.

Serrão made a huge impact on history. He helped Portugal get a special deal for spices. This deal gave Portugal control over cloves on Ternate. This trade deal lasted for one hundred years. He was also the first European to reach the northern Moluccas. Serrão wrote letters about the Spice Islands to a man named Ferdinand Magellan. These letters were very important. They helped Magellan convince the King of Spain to pay for a trip around the world.

Serrão’s life ended in the year 1521. He died in Ternate around the same time Magellan died in the Philippines. Some people think he might have been poisoned at the Sultan's court. We do not know for sure why he died. His story shows how much the world was changing. Explorers were finding new paths across the sea. They were connecting far away lands through trade and travel.
