In 1511, he joined a trip to find the Spice Islands. These islands grew nutmeg and mace. People used these spices for food and medicine. They were worth a lot of money.

In 1512, Serrão's ship hit a reef and broke. He and his crew reached an island called Hitu. Serrão had armor and guns. This impressed the local leaders. He also helped them in their fights.

Serrão went to the island of Ternate. He met the ruler, Sultan Bayan Sirrullah. They became very close friends. The Sultan made Serrão his personal adviser. Serrão decided to stay in Ternate. He did not try to go home.

Serrão wrote letters about the Spice Islands. These letters helped Ferdinand Magellan plan a big trip around the world. Serrão died in 1521. This was around the same time Magellan died. Serrão was the first European to reach the northern Moluccas. He also helped Portugal make a trade deal for spices. This deal lasted for one hundred years.
