This city is part of a large group of cities called the Cebu Metropolitan area.

The land in Mandaue is mostly very flat. About 77.37% of the area has a very low slope. Most of the ground is made of Mandaue Clay Loam soil. This flat land is good for building things. There is even a place called the North Special Administrative Zone. This area was made by reclaiming land from the sea. About 180 hectares were used for this project. The city is actually one of the smallest government units in Metro Cebu. It is the second smallest after the town of Cordova.

Mandaue has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, a group of Austronesian people lived there. A writer named Antonio Pigafetta once wrote about a settlement called "Mandaui." Later, Spanish authorities turned the area into a town. In 1818, there were 2,729 native families living there. The town went through many changes during the Philippine Revolution of 1898. In 1901, Mandaue finally became an independent municipality. It later became a chartered city on August 30, 1969.
