The city also has the Aseana City business district. This district includes the Ayala Malls Manila Bay.

People have many stories about how the city got its name. One myth says a huge banyan tree looked like a ship. This tree stood at the mouth of the Parañaque River. People called the place Palanyag. Another story involves fishermen and rice farmers having a feast. They drank coconut toddy and wanted to name the land together. They merged their words to create the name Palalanyag. A third story says Spanish soldiers shouted "¡Para aquí!" to stop a carriage. The coachman did not understand them and told others about the "para aniya ake" sounds.

Parañaque has a very long history. It was officially founded in 1580 by the Order of Saint Augustine. Fray Diego de Espiñar was the first minister.
