The land has three main parts. These are the bay, the coastal edge, and the Guadalupe Plateau. Half of the land is for homes. The other half is for shops, factories, and schools.

There are many different stories about how the city got its name. One story says traders brought pineapples here to sell. The Spanish word for pineapple is "piñas." Another story says the name was once "Las Peñas," which means "the rocks." This might be because people used the area to find stone for buildings.

A long time ago, Las Piñas was a huge center for making salt.

Workers used solar beds to dry the salt with the sun. They used clay tiles to keep the salt very clean. This made the salt as white as snow. They called the best kind "primera" salt. People used it to make gourmet meals taste better. Today, the salt industry has ended. You can still visit the Irasan Center to see how it used to work.

Life in the city is very active today. About 615,549 people live in the 20 different barangays.

Most residents speak Tagalog or English. Many people follow the Roman Catholic religion. There are many places to visit, like the Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park. You can also find big shopping centers like SM Southmall. People even use coconut husks to make nets that protect riverbanks from washing away. These nets help keep the soil in place naturally.
