The city is bordered by several other areas. To the north is Pasay. To the northeast lies Taguig. To the southeast is Muntinlupa. To the southwest is Las Piñas. To the west, the city meets the waters of Manila Bay.

The city has a tropical climate. This means there are only two distinct seasons. The wet season lasts from July to September. The dry season runs from October to June. The city sees an average daily maximum temperature of 32 degrees Celsius. It also receives an annual rainfall of 1,830 millimeters.

Many interesting myths explain the name of the city. One story involves a large balete tree. This banyan tree looked like a majestic ship. It stood at the mouth of the Parañaque River. Because of this, people used the Tagalog name Palanyag. This name came from the word "palayag," meaning "point of navigation." Another legend involves a feast between fishermen and rice farmers. The farmers were called "tagá-palayán." The fishermen wanted to name the place "Palalayag." They eventually merged the words into "Palalanyag." A third myth involves Spanish soldiers in a carriage. They shouted "¡Para aquí!" to tell the driver to stop. The driver did not understand the Spanish words. He told others about the sounds "para aniya ake." This eventually became the name Parañaque.

History shows that the settlement was known as "Palañac" in the late 16th century. Miguel de Loarca recorded this in 1582. The city was officially founded in 1580. This happened by the Order of Saint Augustine. Fray Diego de Espiñar served as the first minister.

In the early years, the people of Parañaque were great traders. They traded with people from China, Japan, Indonesia, India, and Malaya. They also worked in many trades. These included saltmaking, fishing, and weaving. They also made shoes and slippers. The community was led by local leaders called cabezas de barangay. These leaders worked alongside the Spanish colonizers.

The city has played a strategic role in Philippine history. In 1574, the Chinese pirate Limahong invaded the town. The people of Don Galo helped stop the attack. This event is called the "Red Sea Incident." It was named for the blood shed by the people of Santa Monica. During the Philippine Revolution of 1896 to 1898, the town was a vital gateway. It sat between Manila and the province of Cavite. Prominent figures like Manuel Quiogue were part of this era. During World War II, the city faced great danger. A Japanese air raid hit Taft Avenue in 1941.

This caused buildings to burn. However, local guerillas helped liberate the town. They provided food and arms to the movement.

Today, Parañaque is a major center for business and trade. It is divided into two distinct districts. The 1st District has eight barangays. These include Baclaran, Tambo, and La Huerta. The 2nd District also has eight barangays. These include BF Homes and San Antonio.

According to the 2024 census, 703,245 people live in the city. The area of Baclaran is very small at 0.63 square kilometers. However, it is very crowded. In contrast, BF Homes is much larger at 7.69 square kilometers. The city is a very busy place. Baclaran is one of the busiest markets in the country. Near the coast, the DAMPA market serves fresh seafood.

The city is also famous for its modern developments. One major area is Entertainment City. This is a large gaming and entertainment complex. It is being developed by the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation.

Parañaque connects to many larger systems in the Philippines. It is part of the National Capital Region. It serves as a gateway for travelers. The city is near the international airport. This makes it an important spot for global connections. The city also manages complex territorial boundaries. It has had disputes with Muntinlupa and Taguig. In 2001, it resolved a dispute with Taguig regarding Bicutan. These connections show how the city fits into the country. It remains a vital part of the nation's economic progress.
