The name Davao comes from the local Bagobo people. They lived in this area a long time ago. The name comes from three different Bagobo words for the Davao River.

One group called the river Davah, which meant a place beyond the high grounds. Another group called it Dawaw, and a third called it Dabo. The river flows into the large Davao Gulf near the city. This waterway is a very important part of the local landscape.

Long ago, the area was covered in thick, lush forests. Many groups like the Bagobos and Matigsalugs lived there.

In the late 1700s, a leader named Datu Bago moved to the area. He built a strong fortress called Pinagurasan near the river. This place eventually grew into a small city and a trade center. By 1843, Datu Bago was even crowned Sultan of his realm. This made his area an independent kingdom near the gulf.

Spanish explorers first saw the area in the 1500s. They avoided the Davao Gulf for a long time because of danger.
