He lived in the Philippines long ago. He was one of two chiefs on his island. The other chief was named Zula.

In 1521, a man named Ferdinand Magellan arrived. He was an explorer from Portugal. He sailed for Spain. Magellan wanted the local leaders to obey the Spanish king. He also wanted them to pay taxes. A leader named Rajah Humabon agreed to this. But Lapulapu said no. He did not want to follow a new king.

On April 27, 1521, a battle began.

Magellan and his men landed on the shore. They faced about 1,500 warriors. Lapulapu's men used spears and large swords. They also used shields. The battle was hard. Magellan was killed during the fight. His men had to sail away.

Because of this fight, the Spanish did not stay for many years. They did not return to the islands until 1565. Today, many people call Lapulapu a hero. They build statues to honor his bravery.
