geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Surigao Strait is a path of water. It is in the southern Philippines. This strait sits between the Bohol Sea and the Leyte Gulf. It lies between Mindanao and Panaon islands. It also sits between the Dinagat Islands and Leyte island. The water is very deep here. It also has a strong current. This means the water moves very fast.

Many ferries cross the strait. They carry people and goods. These boats move between Visayas and Mindanao. Some ferries stop at Liloan. Other boats stop at Surigao City.

People have many stories about the name. One legend says it came from a leader named Solibao. Spanish explorers may have heard his name wrong. Another idea says the name comes from a Spanish word. That word means swift water.

Many famous ships sailed here. Ferdinand Magellan sailed through in 1521. Later, a big battle happened in 1944. American battleships fought a Japanese force. Many ships were sunk during this fight. It is a very important place for travel and history.
