The Solomon Sea is a large sea. It sits in the Pacific Ocean. It lies between Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. The sea has many islands near its edges. These include Bougainville and Malaita. It also sits near the Bismarck Sea.

The sea is very deep. It sits above a part of the Earth called a plate. This plate helps make the sea's shape. One spot is called Planet Deep. This is a trench, which is a deep crack in the sea floor. Planet Deep is 29,988 feet deep. That is 9,140 meters below the water.

Many battles took place here during World War II. The sea gets its name from the Solomon Islands. A Spanish explorer named Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira found them. He named them after a legend. The legend was about the wealth of King Solomon. This sea is a very important part of the ocean.
