This is very rare. Only about one in 1,000 people who reach 100 live this long.

These people often stay healthy for a long time. They usually do not have big sicknesses. This includes things like heart disease or cancer. They often stay well until the very end of their lives. Scientists study them to learn how to live longer. They want to know how some bodies stay strong.

One study looked at the brain. It found a part called the cerebellum stays young. This part of the brain may help them stay sharp. Scientists also look at DNA. DNA is the code inside our bodies. Some supercentenarians have special genes. These genes help fix damage in their cells. This might help them live to such a high age. [Caption: Maria Branyas Morera celebrating her 117th birthday.]
