The number of people on Earth is growing.

In 1804, there were only 1 billion people. Now, there are 8 billion people. This happened because of better medicine. We also became better at growing food.

Some people worry about this growth. They call it overpopulation. This is when there are too many people for the Earth to support. They fear we might run out of food or clean water. They also worry about pollution.

Other people do not share this worry. They say growth is slowing down. They think new tools and science will help us. New technology can make food more easily. It can also help us use resources better.

Experts are still studying the future. The United Nations thinks the population will peak soon. They think it may reach 10.4 billion people in the 2080s. Then, the number might start to drop. Other studies suggest the peak might happen even sooner.
