Some people live to be incredibly old. We call these people supercentenarians. A supercentenarian is someone who is 110 years or older.

This is a very rare thing to happen. Only about one in every 1,000 people who reach age 100 will live this long. Most supercentenarians stay healthy for a long time. They often live without big sicknesses until the very end of their lives. This helps scientists learn how people might live longer lives.

Scientists study how these bodies work to find secrets of health. Many supercentenarians stay free of major diseases for a long time. These diseases include things like cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. They often stay well until they reach the very end of their lives. At that time, they might die from an exhaustion of organ reserve. This is the body's ability to bring organs back to a steady state.

Researchers look at many different parts of the body. One study looked at 30 different body parts in a 112-year-old woman. They used something called an epigenetic clock to check the age of tissues. This clock shows how old a part of the body is acting. The study found the cerebellum was protected from aging. This part of the brain acted 15 years younger than expected.

People have been curious about extreme age for a very long time. Geert Adriaans Boomgaard from the Netherlands was the first verified supercentenarian. He turned 110 years old in the year 1898. In 1902, Margaret Ann Neve became the first verified female supercentenarian. Jeanne Calment from France lived to be 122 years and 164 days old. She had the longest documented human life. The oldest man ever verified was Jiroemon Kimura from Japan.

Many countries have many supercentenarians. A study in 2010 found 663 supercentenarians who lived or died. The United States had the highest total number of these people. Japan, England, Wales, France, and Italy also had many. Researchers use groups like the Gerontology Research Group to keep lists. They estimate there are between 300 and 450 living supercentenarians today.
