Hyperthermia is when a person's body gets too hot.

This happens when the body makes or takes in more heat than it can let out. It is different from a fever. In a fever, the brain changes the body's target temperature. In hyperthermia, the target stays the same, but the heat just keeps rising.

One common cause is heat stroke. This happens when extreme heat or humidity overwhelms the body. People can get heat stroke from being in the sun. It can also happen from hard work in the heat. This is called exertional heat stroke.

Other people get it just by sitting in a hot place. This is called situational heat stroke. It often affects the very young or the elderly.

Other things can cause high heat. Some drugs can make the body produce too much heat. Even some medicines used in surgery can cause it. Special suits used by workers can also trap heat. When the body gets too hot, its parts may stop working well. This can lead to very serious illness or death.
