Human body temperature

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Your body stays at a warm level to stay healthy. This is called your body temperature. Most people have an average temperature of 37°C. But your heat is not the same all day. It follows a rhythm called a circadian rhythm.

Your temperature changes based on the time. It is lowest around 4 a.m. It is highest in the late afternoon. Your body also changes heat when you are hungry or sick. Being active can make your temperature change more, too.

Your brain helps keep your heat in a safe range. This way is called thermoregulation.

Doctors use different tools to check your heat. They might use a thermometer in your mouth. This is called an oral temperature. They can also check in your ear. This is called a tympanic temperature. They can even check under your arm. This is called an axillary temperature. Different spots give different readings. For example, heat in the ear is often higher than heat under the arm. This helps doctors know how you are doing.
