Humans have two types of sweat glands. The first are eccrine glands. These are all over your body. They make watery sweat to help you cool down. The second are apocrine glands. These are in your armpits. They make an oily sweat. Tiny bugs on your skin eat this sweat. This is how sweat gets a smell.

Sweating helps with thermoregulation. This is a way to keep your body at the right heat. When sweat leaves your skin, it turns into gas. This is called evaporation. As it happens, it pulls heat away from your body.

Your brain helps control this. It feels when you are too hot. Then it tells your glands to work. You might sweat when you are hot. You might also sweat when you feel strong emotions.

Some animals do not sweat like we do. Dogs stay cool by panting. Horses have a special protein in their sweat. It is called latherin. It helps the sweat move through their thick hair.
