There are three main types of tears. The first kind is called basal tears. These tears keep your eyes wet and nourished. They also help wash away dust.

The second kind is reflex tears. These happen when something bothers your eye. For example, onion fumes or dust can cause them. These tears try to wash the irritant away.

The third kind is emotional tears. You might make these when you feel sad or even very happy. These tears are different from the others. They contain more stress hormones. This may help your body balance stress levels.

These parts work together to protect your eyes.

When you cry a lot, your nose might run. This happens because tears flow into your nose through small tubes. This path leads to your nasal cavity.
