Your face is the front of your head. It holds many sense organs. These include your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Many animals have faces too. Some have long snouts. Others have flat faces.

Your face helps you show feelings. Small facial muscles move your skin. A smile can show you are happy. A frown can show you are unhappy. This helps people understand you.

No two faces are exactly the same. Your face shape comes from your skull bones. These bones include the maxilla and the mandible. The mandible is your jaw. Soft parts like fat, hair, and skin also change your look.

Babies have special fat in their cheeks. This fat helps them while they suckle. As you grow, these fat pads go away. Your bones will become more visible.

Your brain has a special part for faces. It is called the fusiform face area. This part helps you recognize people. If it is damaged, you might not know your own family.
