Supercar

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A supercar is a special kind of street-legal sports car. These cars have power and speed like race track cars. They often look very low to the ground. This low shape helps them move through the air easily. Scientists call this reducing aerodynamic drag. A low car also has a good center of gravity. This helps the car handle turns very well.

Many supercars use a mid-engine design to work better. This means the engine sits in the middle of the car. This setup helps with speed and handling. Some cars are even faster and more rare. People call these amazing cars hypercars. Hypercars are the highest-performing supercars in the world. They are often built in very small numbers. They can cost more than one million dollars.

People have been building these cars for a long time. The Lamborghini Miura from 1966 is often called the first supercar. In the 1960s, American muscle cars also had high-performance versions. These were part of the "horsepower wars" between makers. By 1965, magazines like Car Life wrote about them. In 1969, the AMC S/C Rambler used the name SuperCar. This car was a street-legal racer.

Different parts of the world make famous supercars. Japan became known for them in the early 1990s. The Honda NSX was a famous Japanese model. Lexus also made the LFA with a V10 engine. In America, the Dodge Viper is a well-known name. Smaller makers like Hennessey make the Venom F5. China is now making new electric supercars. These include the NIO EP9 and the Yangwang U9.

Technology is changing how these cars move. Many new hypercars use a hybrid drivetrain. This means they use both fuel and electricity. The McLaren P1 started this trend in 2013. Some cars now use only electricity to run. The Rimac Nevera is a full-electric example. These cars use parts and ideas from professional motorsports. This helps them reach incredible speeds.
