A muscle car is a special kind of American car built for speed.

These are usually two-door cars that focus on high performance. They are famous for having very powerful engines. People often call them performance-oriented cars because they are made to go fast. While people still debate exactly what makes a muscle car, they usually have a large V8 engine. This is a type of engine with eight cylinders. Most of these cars also use rear-wheel drive to help them move. They were most popular during the 1960s and early 1970s.

To make a muscle car, makers use a specific way of working. They take a large, powerful engine and put it into a smaller, lighter car. This makes the vehicle much faster than a heavy luxury car.

Some makers even made cars just for drag racing on a straight track. To save weight, they used light materials like fiberglass or aluminum for bumpers. They might even use plastic windows to keep the car light. Some racing versions even left out the radio or the heater to help the car go faster.

The idea for these cars started many years ago. In 1949, Oldsmobile made the Rocket 88. This car put a powerful engine into a lighter body. It was very successful and won eight out of ten races in the 1950 NASCAR season. Later, in 1955, Chrysler made the C-300. It was called "America's Most Powerful Car" and could reach 124 miles per hour. In 1957, American Motors Corporation made the Rambler Rebel. This was a mid-sized car with a big engine. It was one of the fastest American sedans at that time.

By the 1960s, car makers were in a huge competition.

This was known as the horsepower war. Companies like Ford and Chrysler raced to see who could make the strongest engine. In 1964, the Pontiac GTO became very famous. It was developed by John DeLorean and an engineer named Bill Collins. The GTO helped start a trend where many companies made fast cars. In 1970, the competition was at its peak. Some cars, like the LS-6 Chevelle, had as much as 450 horsepower. This era changed how people thought about fast cars.

You can see the link between muscle cars and racing today. Many of these cars were built using ideas from "hot rodding." This means taking a small car and adding a huge engine to make it go fast in a straight line. Some people even called these early models "supercars." This was a name used before it meant the very expensive cars we see now. Whether they were for the street or the drag strip, muscle cars were all about power. They turned everyday driving into something much more exciting.
