A city-state is a very special kind of place. It is an independent city that acts like its own country.

In a normal country, you usually find many cities and large areas of countryside. A city-state is different because the city is the main hub for everything. It serves as the center for politics, money, and culture. This single city holds all the power for its territory.

Some cities have full sovereignty, which means they rule themselves completely. Other places have a lot of power but are not fully sovereign.

Many different types of city-states have existed throughout history. In ancient times, Sumerian cities like Uruk and Ur were important.

Ancient Greece had famous city-states called poleis, such as Athens and Sparta. In the Middle Ages, many cities in Europe were also independent. For example, the Free Imperial Cities in the Holy Roman Empire had a lot of freedom. These cities often made alliances with each other to stay strong. Some cities even joined groups like the Hanseatic League to help with trade. These groups helped small cities work together like a larger team.

In Italy, city-states were very common during the Renaissance period.

Cities like Venice, Genoa, and Florence became very wealthy. They grew rich through trade and making goods to sell. Most of these Italian cities were ruled by one person or a single family. For instance, the House of Sforza was a famous ruling family. These cities were so successful that they influenced all of Europe. However, many of these small states eventually disappeared. They often lacked the resources to defend themselves against huge empires.

Different parts of the world had their own versions of city-states. In Southeast Asia, people organized settlements called mueang. These were often part of a system where smaller cities paid tribute to larger ones. In the Philippines, early groups lived in units called barangays. These were sometimes ruled by leaders known as Datus, Rajahs, or Sultans. The name likely came from the balangay, which was a type of plank boat. In Central Europe, cities like Bremen and Hamburg used their wealth to gain diplomatic power. These cities showed that even a small place can have a big voice.

Today, we can still see examples of city-states in our modern world. Singapore is the largest and most populous city-state on Earth. It has its own currency and a strong military.

Monaco is another example and is the second smallest country in the world. Vatican City is also a well-known city-state. Some people also look at places like Dubai or Hong Kong in similar ways. Even though the world has many large nation-states now, city-states remain important. They show us how a single center can shape the whole world.
