A stateless society is a way of living without a central government.

In these groups, no single person or office holds all the power. Authority is very limited and often does not last forever. People might have leaders, but these leaders cannot make every rule. Instead, these societies use custom and shared rules to stay organized. They are often small groups like tribes, clans, or bands. Because they are small, everyone can know each other well.

These societies work through cooperation and shared tasks.

Many people do not have one special job like a soldier or a lawyer. Instead, they might farm different things to help the whole community. This is different from a state, where some people work to support leaders. In a state, taxes or tributes pay for things like scribes and tax collectors. In a stateless group, people often trade goods or help each other out. They rely on social bonds to make sure everyone has what they need.

For most of human history, people lived without states.

The first city-states appeared in Mesopotamia about 6,000 years ago. Before that, large settlements like Çatalhöyük existed in the Stone Age. This farming community lived between 7,300 BCE and 6,700 BCE. It covered about 13 hectares and held up to 10,000 people. Even with so many people, no evidence of a state was found there. Another famous place is Jericho, which also had no central state authority.

History shows us many different ways these groups lived.

The Harappan civilization lived in the Indus region a long time ago. Some experts think they might have been a stateless commonwealth. They had large cities, but no palaces or royal graves have been found. In other places, like Africa, European colonizers often misunderstood stateless tribes. These tribes had organized ways to manage land and cattle. They used social honor and family lines to keep order without a government.

Today, almost everyone lives inside a state's borders.

Most stateless groups were eventually brought into larger state societies. However, some people still study these ways as a political idea. Anarchists believe that society could work better without a state. They think people can organize themselves through different types of freedom. Even Marxism suggests that a state might one day become unnecessary. Understanding these old ways helps us see how humans can live together.
