A stateless society has no central government. There is no single leader with all the power. Instead, people live in small groups like tribes or clans. These groups may have leaders, but they do not have total control.

In the past, many people lived this way. For a long time, humans did not have states. The first city-states appeared in Mesopotamia about 6,000 years ago. Before that, people lived in places like Çatalhöyük. This was a farming town with many people. They did not have a state to rule them.

In these groups, people often work together. They may farm different crops to feed the group. If people have a fight, they talk to the community. Elders might help them find a fair way to fix it. People follow these rules to stay in good standing with others.

Some thinkers today still study these ways. Anarchists believe life is better without a state. Others believe states might not be needed in the future. Today, almost everyone lives under a state. But the history of stateless groups is still very important.
