Most chiefs get their power from their family. This is called kinship. The role often passes from parents to their children. This creates different social classes. Some people are part of an elite group. Other people are commoners. This can make life unfair because some have more power than others. In ancient Hawaii, there were even four different classes.

A simple chiefdom has one main town. Many smaller towns live near it. These smaller towns follow the main chief. A complex chiefdom is even bigger. It is a group of many chiefdoms. A paramount chief rules over all of them. These leaders often collect tribute. Tribute is goods or food given to the leader.

Many groups used chiefdoms in the past. The Cherokee people had a ruling family. In Africa, many groups had traditional leaders. These leaders are still important in some places today.
