A nation-state is a very specific way to organize a country.

In a normal country, many different groups might live together. But in a nation-state, the political state and the nation are the same. The state is the group that rules a specific area. The nation is a community of people with a shared identity. This identity often comes from having the same culture or language. Because of this, a nation-state is more precise than just calling a place a country.

There are many ways to group people and lands together. An empire is a large unit made of many different territories. These are often won through conquest and have one center that rules others. A multinational state is different because no single group is the boss. A city-state is much smaller than a large nation. There are also confederations, which are leagues of different sovereign states. Even a federated state might only have some power to rule itself. These different labels help us understand how people live together.

Historians have many different ideas about how these states began. Some scholars believe the nation-state came from new ways of mapping the world. They say discoveries in geography and map-making in the 15th century helped. Other people think the nation existed before the state was ever made. They believe nationalist movements fought to create states for their people. Some theories say governments created nations on purpose. They did this by using schools and mass media to unify people.

Many important changes happened during the 19th century in Europe.

During this time, groups in places like Germany and Italy worked to unite. Before they were one nation-state, their lands were divided into many small pieces. In France, the government used laws to teach one standard language. This helped people feel like one single nation. In the 1880s, new laws on public instruction helped this happen even more. This era also saw the rise of the Westphalian system after 1648. This system helped states recognize each other's borders and power.

History also shows that the idea of the nation-state can be used in ways that hurt people. In the 20th century, some leaders used ethnic identity to exclude others. This happened during the rise of fascism and Nazism.

In Nazi Germany, laws like the 1935 Nuremberg laws were used to target people. Groups like the Jews and the Roma were not seen as part of the people. This led to terrible persecution. Today, the world is still changing for nation-states. International groups and big companies now have more power than they used to.
