In this country, the people share a common identity. This might mean they share the same culture. It might also mean they share the same language.

In the past, many lands were big empires.

Empires often had many different groups of people. These groups did not always share the same ways of life. This was different from a nation-state.

Some people believe the nation came first. They think people joined together to make a state. Other people think the state came first. They say leaders used schools to make people feel like one nation. For example, in France, the government helped people learn one language.

In the 1800s, many new nation-states began to form.

Some groups fought to have their own land. This was part of a time of big changes in Europe. Today, the world is still changing. Large groups and new rules affect how nation-states work.
