Sovereign state

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A sovereign state is a land with the highest power. It is an independent place. To be a state, a place needs four things. It needs a set group of people. It needs a clear area of land. It needs a government. It also needs to talk with other states.

There are two main ways to think about states. One way is called the constitutive theory. This idea says a state is real only if other states say so. This was common in the 1800s. Another way is the declarative theory. This idea says a state is real if it has land, people, and a government. It does not need others to say it is real. This was written in the Montevideo Convention in 1933.

In real life, recognition matters a lot. Recognition is when one state says another is a real state. If other states do not recognize a place, it is hard to work together. Some places, like Northern Cyprus, are only recognized by one other state. This makes it hard for them to join the world community.
