People learn these ways through stories called hadith. These stories tell of his habits and sayings. They help people know how to pray. For example, Sunnah can mean a special way to pray. Some people might offer extra prayers as a good act.

Different groups of Muslims use different books to learn. Sunni Muslims often use six major collections of hadith. Shias look to the Prophet's family for guidance. They use their own special books. Ibadis also have their own collections. Sufis believe they learn spiritual values through teachers.

In the past, the word Sunnah had many meanings. It could mean a habit or a custom. Some early scholars even looked at how Muhammad's friends lived. Later, a scholar named al-Shafi'i helped set a strict focus. He helped make the Sunnah about Muhammad's own example. Today, Sunnah is a very important part of life for many. It helps guide their beliefs and their laws.
