However, the strict focus on Muhammad's specific example as the only authoritative source was established later. A major turning point occurred in the late second century of Islam through the scholar al-Shafi'i, who died in 820 CE.

Al-Shafi'i argued for a more focused definition of the Sunnah. He helped establish the idea that the Sunnah should be strictly linked to the Prophet's own actions and sayings. This development led the term to become almost synonymous with hadith reports. Before this era, regional schools of law in cities like Mecca, Kufa, Basra, and Syria had more flexible definitions. These schools might include the rulings of Caliphs or the customs of the community. They also acknowledged traditions from the Sahabah, who were the companions of Muhammad. Some scholars, such as al-Nawawi, even referred to these as unrecorded hadith.

The significance of the Sunnah extends into the specific legal and social practices of the community. In the context of Sharia, or Islamic law, different scholars have held different views on the distinction between Sunnah and hadith. For example, the scholar Malik ibn Anas was known to reject certain traditions if they contradicted the established practice of the people of Medina. In daily worship, the term Sunnah is also used to describe actions that are encouraged but not strictly obligatory. An example of this is offering two extra rakat of prayer after the Maghrib prayer. This makes the Sunnah a way to earn extra merit through commendable acts.

Finally, the Sunnah connects to broader theological and historical ideas. Some scholars, such as Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, suggest that the concept of Sunnah predates Muhammad. They point to verses in the Qur'an that mention the "way of the ancients" or the "way of God." This suggests a tradition of the prophets of God that includes figures like Ibrahim and Musa. The term itself carries many meanings in Arabic, including "habit," "customary procedure," or even a "path" or "way of life." Whether viewed as a legal precedent or a spiritual guide, the Sunnah remains a foundational element of Islamic identity and practice.
