A suburb is a residential area located near a large city.

Most people living in these areas travel to the city center for work. This travel is often called commuting. People use many different ways to travel to their jobs. They might use private cars or public transit like buses and trains. Suburbs are usually less crowded than the center of a city. This means there is more space between houses and buildings. Some suburbs are part of a larger city. Other suburbs are separate towns with their own local leaders.

How a suburb works depends on where it is located. In the United States, some suburbs are their own legal towns. In the United Kingdom, most suburbs are part of the city they surround. In Australia and New Zealand, suburbs are used as official names for parts of a city. These names help the postal service deliver mail to the right place.

Some areas are called "inner suburbs" if they are close to the city center. These areas often have many apartment buildings. "Outer suburbs" are further away and have more space. Some people even live in "exurbs," which are even further out than the suburbs.

Suburbs have existed for a very long time in different forms. The word comes from Latin words meaning "under" or "below" the city. In ancient Rome, wealthy people built large estates on the edges of the city.

In China, many people lived in small towns just outside the capital of Luoyang. During the 1800s, the modern suburb began to grow. This happened because cities were becoming very crowded and dirty. People wanted to move to quieter areas with better air. As trains and roads improved, it became much easier to live far away and still work in the city.

In London, the Metropolitan Railway helped create many new suburbs.

In the 1860s, this railway connected the city to new areas. The railway company even created a guide called "Metro-land" in 1915. This guide promised people a modern home in the beautiful countryside. They sold land in places like Wembley Park and Willesden Park Estate. After World War I, companies like the Metropolitan Railway Country Estates Limited built even more homes. They created many new neighborhoods for families to enjoy.

Suburbs are often linked to the economy of the nearby city. Many people move to suburbs because they want to own their own house.

Some suburbs were even designed with special plans, like the garden suburbs. A woman named Henrietta Barnett helped start the Hampstead Garden Suburb in 1904. This area was designed to be a beautiful place to live. Today, suburbs continue to grow around cities that have plenty of flat land. They remain a very important part of how people live and work in the modern world.
