A suburb is a place where people live near a big city.

Most people in suburbs travel to the city for work. They use cars, buses, or trains to get there.

Suburbs have been around for a long time. In ancient Rome, wealthy people built large homes on the edge of the city. In China, many people lived in small towns just outside the capital city of Luoyang.

Modern suburbs grew quickly in the 1800s and 1900s. This happened because of new trains and roads. In London, the Metropolitan Railway helped people move away from the crowded city.

The railway company even made a guide called "Metro-land." It promised people a modern home in the beautiful countryside.

Suburbs look different in different places. In Australia, many suburbs have large yards.

In the United States, some suburbs are part of a city. In other places, they are separate towns. Some suburbs have many houses close together. Other areas have more space and fewer people.
