He was known as one of the best leaders in China. Even the leader Mao Zedong thought he was a top commander. He was highly respected for his skill in planning. He helped lead many important groups of soldiers during times of war. His life was full of big changes and hard choices. He became a very important part of China's history.

Su Yu learned how to lead by being very smart in battle. He often used a way of fighting called guerrilla warfare. This meant using small, quick moves to surprise a larger enemy. Later, he helped change the way his army fought. He moved toward a more mobile and regular style of warfare. This helped his troops move quickly to the right places. These clever plans helped his side win many difficult fights.

Su Yu was born on August 10, 1907, in Huitong County.
