He was born on November 23, 1920, in a place called Tokhung. His early life was quite difficult because his family was very poor. They lived in a single rented room in Pyongyang. His mother worked hard at a rubber factory to help feed the family. Paik studied at several schools before joining a military academy in 1939. This training helped him start a long career in the military.

Paik became a famous general during the Korean War. The war began very early on June 25, 1950. Paik was in Seoul when the fighting started. He quickly took command of the 1st Infantry Division. His soldiers fought hard to protect the city. Even when they had to pull back, they kept their groups organized. This helped them fight a delaying action against the enemy. Because of his leadership, he was promoted to Brigadier General in July 1950.

He worked closely with American soldiers during these battles. This was the first time Korean and American forces worked together in a joint operation. His team even used special tools to stop enemy tanks. Later, in October 1950, Paik helped his country recapture Pyongyang. This was the capital of North Korea and his own birthplace.
