Kim Jae-gyu was a high-ranking leader in South Korea. He was a general in the army and the director of the Korean Central Intelligence Agency, known as the KCIA.

For many years, he was a close friend of President Park Chung Hee. This friendship made his later actions very surprising to everyone. People today still debate who he really was. Some see him as a hero who fought for democracy. Others see him as a traitor who killed his friend.

Kim's career involved many different and important jobs. He graduated from the Joseon Defense Academy in 1946. This was the same year as Park Chung Hee. In 1963, he became a commander for the 6th Division. He later held many high positions in the military. In 1974, he served as the Construction Minister. During this time, he helped Korean companies work in Saudi Arabia. This work helped the country grow much wealthier.

In 1976, President Park gave Kim a very powerful job. He became the director of the KCIA. The KCIA was a group that gathered secret information. It was meant to protect the country from North Korea. However, the group also used its power to control people. It could arrest people or use force against those who disagreed with the government.

Kim said he took this job to help change the system. He wanted to persuade the President to make things fairer.

Life in South Korea was difficult under the Yushin Constitution. This was a set of rules made in 1972. The rules gave President Park almost total control. He could pick many leaders and stay in power for life.

Kim did not agree with these rules. He spoke to religious leaders like Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan about making changes. He also helped families of people who fought for democracy. Some say he even tried to stop the President from staying in power much earlier.

Everything changed on October 26, 1979. On this day, Kim Jae-gyu killed President Park.

This event was a huge shock to the nation. Kim was later executed by hanging on May 24, 1980. His life remains a complicated story of loyalty and change. He was a man of many contradictions. Some believe he acted for his country, while others believe he acted out of anger. Historians still study his many roles to understand what happened.
