Kim Jae-gyu was a leader in the South Korean army.

He worked for President Park Chung Hee. They were close friends for many years.

In 1976, Kim became the director of the KCIA. The KCIA was a powerful group. It helped the government keep control. It also used force against people who disagreed with the leader. Kim had many different roles. As a minister, he helped Korea trade with Saudi Arabia. This brought a lot of money to the country.

However, Kim also worked in a hard system. President Park used the Yushin Constitution to stay in power. This set of rules let him rule for life. Kim did not like these rules. He spoke to leaders about making things fairer. He also helped people who fought for democracy.

On October 26, 1979, Kim killed President Park. This was a huge shock to the world.

Some people call Kim a hero. They say he wanted freedom for his people. Other people call him a traitor. They say he killed his friend.

People still study his life today.
