Samuel Kanyon Doe was a leader in Liberia. He was born on May 6, 1951, in a small village called Tuzon. His family belonged to the Krahn people.

As a young man, he joined the Armed Forces of Liberia. He wanted to earn a scholarship for high school. He eventually became a master sergeant in the army. By 1979, he was an administrator in the city of Monrovia.

In 1980, Doe changed how Liberia was ruled. He led a military coup to take power. This was a violent event where he overthrew President William Tolbert.

During the fighting, many people were killed. Doe then formed the People's Redemption Council to rule the country. This group was made of himself and 14 other officers. His takeover ended 133 years of rule by the Americo-Liberian elite.

Doe wanted to show he was a formal leader. He promised to bring back civilian rule by 1985. He even used the title "Dr. Doe" after a visit to South Korea.

In 1984, a new constitution was approved by the people. Doe ran for president in an election in 1985. He won with 51% of the votes. However, many people believed the election was not fair. They said there was widespread fraud during the voting.

His time as president was a hard time for many. He favored people from his own Krahn group. He also treated the Gio and Mano tribes very poorly. This caused great tension and anger in the country. The United States supported him during the Cold War to stop Soviet influence. But as his rule became more strict, the United States became critical of him. He even set a curfew in the streets of the capital.

Conflict eventually led to a civil war in Liberia. In December 1989, Charles Taylor led an invasion from the Ivory Coast.

Taylor wanted to overthrow Doe's government. In 1990, Doe was captured by a group called the INPFL. This group was led by a man named Prince Johnson. Doe was executed that same year. His life and leadership changed Liberia forever.
