He served as the 19th president of the country. He was the longest-serving president in Liberia's history. He held this role from 1944 until he died in 1971. Many people call him the "father of modern Liberia." This is because he helped the country grow in many ways. He wanted to make the economy and the buildings stronger.

Tubman used a special plan to help his country. This plan was called the "open door" policy. He used it to invite businesses from other lands to invest. He wanted foreign companies to build things in Liberia. Because of this, foreign investment grew by 200 percent. This happened between the years 1944 and 1970. The money helped the country become much more prosperous. From 1950 to 1960, the economy grew very fast each year.

Tubman's family had a very interesting history. He was born on November 29, 1895, in Harper. His family was once very poor. His ancestors were people who were formerly enslaved in the United States. They moved to Liberia to start a new life long ago. His grandfather, Alexander Tubman, worked as a stonemason. His family even named a place Tubman Hill after a kind woman.

Before he was president, Tubman had many different jobs. He went to school in Harper and studied law. He became a lawyer in 1917. He also worked as a teacher and a tax collector. In 1923, he became a senator at only 28 years old. This made him the youngest senator in Liberia's history. Later, he served as an associate justice on the Supreme Court.

Tubman also worked to connect Liberia to the rest of the world. He was a close friend of the United States. In 1944, he and Edwin Barclay visited President Franklin D. Roosevelt. They were the first African heads of state to visit the White House. He also helped start the African Union in 1961. This group helped African nations work together. He used the new money to build roads and hospitals. He even started a program to help people learn to read in 1948.
