He was born in 1921 and was the fourth son in his family. When he was only seven years old, he lost his father. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1938 to help his country. He worked as a soldier in the 8th Route Army for 12 years. During this time, he fought in the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese Civil War. He even used a new name, Hua Guofeng, to show his dedication to the party.

As the years passed, Hua moved up through many different jobs. In 1948, he became a party secretary in Hunan. He worked in a place called Xiangtan, which was near the home of the leader Mao Zedong. Mao was impressed by how simple Hua was when they met in 1955. Hua helped build a special memorial hall for Mao in 1959. Later, he worked on helping farms grow more food. In 1973, Mao gave him even more power by making him the Minister of Public Security. This job meant he was in charge of the police and security forces.

In 1976, many big things happened all at once. First, the leaders Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong both died.

After Mao died, Hua became the top leader of the party and the military. He also had to deal with a group called the Gang of Four. This group held a lot of power and had many strict rules. In October 1976, Hua and his supporters arrested the Gang of Four. This helped end a difficult time called the Cultural Revolution. Hua also helped lead relief efforts after a huge earthquake hit Tangshan in July 1976.

Even though Hua was very powerful, his time at the top did not last forever. Other leaders, like Deng Xiaoping, wanted to lead the country in a different way. Between December 1978 and June 1981, these leaders moved Hua out of his top jobs.
