It sits in the English Channel. This water separates Great Britain from Europe. The shortest way across is only 20.6 miles.

On clear days, you can see the other coast. You might see the white cliffs of Dover from France.

This place is very busy. Over 400 big ships pass through every day. Most ships use it to travel between oceans. Ferries also cross the water to link towns. You can even travel under the sea. The Channel Tunnel goes deep under the seabed.

Long ago, this area was dry land. We call this land Doggerland.

Big floods changed everything. These floods washed away the land to make the strait. Much of the sea floor is made of chalk. This chalk also makes the famous white cliffs.

Many sea animals live here too. The water has rocky spots and sandy flats. Some animals find calm, clear water to hide in. This makes the strait a special home for them.
