It connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. This water sits between two big lands. Europe is on the north side. Africa is on the south side.

Spain and a place called Gibraltar sit on the north. Morocco and Ceuta are on the south. At its narrowest point, the water is only 14.2 kilometers wide. Because it is so close, ferries cross every day. A trip can take as little as 35 minutes.

Many animals use this path. Hundreds of thousands of seabirds fly through it each year. A group of 36 orcas also lives in these waters.

The water moves in a special way. Some water flows east into the Mediterranean Sea. Other water flows west into the Atlantic Ocean. This happens because the Mediterranean water is very salty. This salty water is heavy, so it sinks and flows out.

People have even talked about building a tunnel under the sea to connect the lands.
