Long ago, this place was not water. It was a land bridge. This land joined the two lands together. Then, big floods changed the land. The water washed the land away. This made the strait.

The sea floor is made of chalk. This makes the white cliffs.

You can see these cliffs from far away. You can even see them on a clear day.

There is also a tunnel under the sea. It goes deep under the ground. People can use it to cross the water. It is a different way to travel.

Eventually, the sea rose and submerged the land around 6,500 to 6,200 BCE. Now, the area is filled with water and deep channels. The seabed is mostly made of chalk, which also forms the high cliffs on the coasts.

Scientists believe two huge floods helped shape the strait.

The first big flood happened about 425,000 years ago. An ice-dammed lake in the North Sea overflowed and broke through the land. This created a massive amount of erosion. A second huge flood happened about 225,000 years ago. These floods cut deep channels into the dry bed of the English Channel. Some underwater holes are now 100 meters deep because of this water plunging over rocks.

Many different kinds of sea life live in these waters. The seabed has rocky zones and sandy flats called sub-aqueous dunes. Strong currents move through the strait at great depths. These currents slow down around rocky areas to create calm pockets. In these quiet spots, the water is clearer and algae can grow. This helps many different species find a home in the strait. Some parts of the area are even protected to keep this wildlife safe.

The Lobourg strait is the deepest part and runs on a NNE–SSW axis. The seabed consists of three main successions of habitats. These include rocky zones, sandy flats, and sub-aqueous dunes. Ships often avoid the rocky zones to protect their nets. Strong tidal currents move through the strait at great depths. These currents slow down around rocky masses to create countercurrents. This process creates deep, calm pockets of water where many species find shelter.

These calm lee zones are essential for local marine life. In these spots, the water is clearer than in the rest of the strait. This clarity allows algae to grow despite the average depth. The presence of algae increases the diversity of local species. Some of these species are endemic, meaning they are found only in this strait. The area acts as a transition zone for species from the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea. Because of this biological richness, parts of the strait are protected. The Ridens et dunes hydrauliques du Pas de Calais is a Natura 2000 protection zone. This zone includes the Varne, Colbart, Vergoyer, and Bassurelle dunes.

The Strait of Dover remains a place of unique human and natural interest. It is a vital link for international trade and transport. People have even attempted unusual crossings of the water. These include crossings by jetpack, bathtub, or swimming. The strait is also a significant cultural landmark. The town of Dover provides a name for a sea area in the British Shipping Forecast.
