Between 1905 and 1967, many children in Australia were taken from their families. These children were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Government leaders and church groups took these children. They often took children who had both Indigenous and white heritage. The government wanted these children to live like white Australians. This was called assimilation.

Children were sent to live in missions or government homes. In these places, they were often not allowed to speak their own languages. Boys learned to work on farms. Girls learned to work in houses. Many of these homes had very poor food and clothes. Life in these places was often very hard and unkind.

It is hard to know exactly how many children were taken. One report says at least 100,000 children were moved. This caused great sadness for many families. Later, leaders spoke to the nation to say they were sorry for these actions.
