Long ago, Indigenous people made many types of structures. Some lived in stone houses or small villages. Later, people from Britain arrived. They built homes that looked like English styles. One style was called Georgian. It was used for big homes and government buildings.

Another style was Gothic Revival. These buildings had pointed arches and tall towers.

As time passed, styles changed. The gold rushes helped cities like Melbourne grow. Many grand Victorian buildings were built then. Some had fancy iron work and slate roofs. People also liked the Italianate style. It showed that people were becoming wealthy.

Australia's weather also changed how people built. Many homes added a verandah. A verandah is a porch that gives shade. This helped keep houses cool in the heat. Today, many architects make unique designs. The Sydney Opera House is a famous symbol.
